Vintage Lego

Animating Lego set 6374 Holiday Home, released in 1983.

The car instructions, animated!

The Holiday Home.

The process

I used the instructions from the website letsbuilditagain as a guide! https://letsbuilditagain.com/instructions/6374/

To texture the car I used a toon shader (cel-shading) to get the flat look and mimic the real paper instructions. For the outlines I used a single grease pencil stroke which can be modified to line art. The studs on top of the red bricks are textured black to further resemble the original instructions.

After animating and rendering, I go to After Effects to edit. To get the vintage effect, I used an overlay of old film. For the colors I brought the saturation down, and washed out the rest of the colors using curves, levels and color balance. I added noise and grain for the extra old look. I animated the wiggle expression to the camera shake and camera lens blur. And to finish a gaussian blur, posterize time set to 12 and a classic vignette!

Using Studio 2.0 to build the Lego set digitally. To import LDraw (Lego computers files) into Blender an add-on needed to be installed. After that it could be animated in Blender.
